Tesla Recalls Thousands of Model 3 and Model Y Cars Over Bright Headlights

Tesla recall of more than 20,000 vehicles in the U.S. after federal regulators found that the low-beam headlights of some Model 3 and Model Y cars emit more light than legally permitted. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved the campaign on Tuesday, saying the higher brightness could decrease visibility to cars coming the other waypotentially leading to a crash. The recall affects around 20,349 Model 3 cars from 2017 up to 2023 and Model Y cars from 2020 to 2023.

The problem is that the low-beam headlights on these vehicles may produce more light than is allowed by standard 108 of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety, which specifies vehicle lighting. When the beams are too bright in certain areas they can cause suffering glare, affecting the vision of other motor vehicle drivers. Tesla had requested regulators to consider the problem unsafe, claiming that the excess light was outside the standard sight lines used by oncoming drivers, and that no incidents or injuries had occurred because of the condition.

The NHTSA denied that petition. Authorities found that the glare could in fact impact the driver of other vehicles as well as those of the car in many circumstances, requiring a formal recall.

A more permanent solution has yet to be finalized. Tesla announced that it would take several days to implement its remedy, which it would not begin until mid- September. The final state of repair will likely be a free corrective action including the repositioning of some headlight components. Owners of the affected vehicles can call customer service for further details. The recall date also coincide with an increased regulatory focus on the company.
